A properly installed 5-inch system can work well when the roof area, run length, outlet count, and downspout layout are suitable. A 6-inch system may be a better fit for a larger roof, steep sections, long runs, concentrated valley flow, or recurring overflow that cannot be corrected with a smaller layout change.
The neighbourhood does not determine gutter size. A larger trough will not correct poor slope, a blocked outlet, too few downspouts, or a discharge route that cannot carry water away safely. In some cases, adding an outlet or relocating a downspout is more useful than increasing every run to 6 inches.
