Downspout Maintenance: Cleaning, Leaks & Drainage

Downspout maintenance starts with three checks: is the pipe clear, is it attached securely, and does the outlet carry water away from the house? Check from the ground in spring and fall, and after storms that leave debris in the eavestrough. Water spilling over a gutter or pooling beside the foundation needs attention.

How to check a downspout

Watch the outlet during rain. A steady flow usually means water is passing through; little flow while the gutter overflows may point to a blockage, a gutter slope problem or an outlet that cannot handle the runoff. Look for water escaping at joints and check whether the bottom extension has shifted.

• Check the eavestrough outlet. Leaves often collect where the gutter meets the downspout. Clearing the bottom pipe alone may leave this blockage in place.
• Look at the elbows. Debris can lodge in bends. An accessible lower elbow may need to be removed and cleaned rather than forcing the obstruction farther into the pipe.
• Check straps and connections. Loose straps let the pipe pull away from the wall. Bent sections, open joints and missing fasteners need repair.
• Check the discharge area. Keep the outlet clear of soil, leaves and snow. Water should drain across your own property without pooling beside the house.

Cleaning a blocked downspout

For an accessible lower section, remove loose debris by hand with gloves, then use a gentle flow of water to check that the pipe drains. Stop if the water backs up. Do not use pressure to drive a clog into a buried drain, and avoid bending the pipe with rigid tools.

Upper outlets and roof-level blockages may require ladder access. Arrange professional cleaning if you cannot reach the work safely from the ground. If a downspout connects to an underground drain, a clear above-ground pipe does not rule out a blockage below it.

Gutter guards can reduce debris entering the system, but the gutters, outlets and downspouts still need inspection.

Where should the water go?

The City of Mississauga recommends extending roof downspouts two metres from the foundation and directing water away from neighbouring properties. The discharge route also needs to avoid driveways and sidewalks where water can freeze.

Repair the pipe or replace it?

A loose strap, displaced extension or damaged elbow may need a small repair. Split seams, crushed sections, repeated leaks or a poorly placed outlet may call for replacement or rerouting. If the gutter also overflows, check the whole system before replacing only the downspout.
